Maya Bay Closing: What Else Can You See and Do in Phi Phi?

Preserving Paradise

Maya Bay beach is now temporay closed until the 30th of September. The temporary closure might seem anoying to those guests who come to Thailand during the traditional Europen Summer holidays, but the Phi Phi Islands offer an abundance of activities and attractions to explore. Phi Phi Islands are more than just Maya Bay.

Why Maya Bay is So Popular

Maya Bay Closing 1st August 2024

Maya Bay, with its crystal-clear waters and stunning limestone cliffs, is one of Thailand’s most famous tourist destinations. It gained worldwide fame after being featured in the 2000 movie “The Beach” starring Leonardo DiCaprio. The bay’s striking beauty, with its crystal-clear waters, white sandy beach, and dramatic cliffs, draws tourists from around the globe. Unfortunately, the influx of visitors has taken a toll on the local ecosystem, necessitating the annual closure to help preserve its natural beauty. It’s a good thing.

What Else Can You See and Do in Phi Phi?

Phi Phi is a paradise for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. Here are some top spots:

• Shark Point: Despite its name, Shark Point is a great place to see harmless leopard sharks, Black Tip reef Sharks and a variety of colourful reef fish.

• Hin Klang: A mid-ocean reef known for its clear waters and abundant marine life, perfect for snorkeling.

Pileh Lagoon

Pileh Lagoon, is a not so hidden gem often overshadowed by Maya Bay. Many people don’t realise that Pileh Lagoon was also featured in the movie The Beach. This emerald lagoon is surrounded by towering cliffs and offers a serene spot for swimming, snorkeling, and simply relaxing in nature’s beauty.

Viewpoints

The Phi Phi Viewpoint is a must-visit for panoramic views of the island. The hike to the top is well worth the effort, offering breathtaking vistas of Phi Phi Don’s twin bays and the surrounding sea.

Monkey Beach

Monkey Beach is home to a colony of playful monkeys. While visiting, be cautious and respect the wildlife. The monkeys can be rather naughty and have been known to grab and some do bite. Its best to appricate these cheeky monkeys from a distance and DO NOT FEED THEM.

Viking Cave

Viking Cave, is famous for its ancient wall paintings and as a harvesting site for bird’s nests, a local delicacy. While entry to the cave is restricted, you can view it from the boat and learn about its historical significance. Plus there is some good snorkeling right infront of the cave.

Beaches
